Day #24. 10/3/13. Turn of Events

Dear Family & Friends,
Yesterday while walking to the "Iron Cross" I twisted my ankle in a rocky hilly area of the path. I believe that it is a bad sprain. We stopped and stayed in a hotel last night and I wrapped it with an ace wrap and elevated my leg, but it has continued to swell. (There was no ice available).  Long story short, I cannot walk on my ankle right now.

I called Jade's taxi service and asked them if I wore the pack and sat quietly and didn't talk could I please go with her in the back of the van.  "No, SeƱora!"

So, we are ending our Camino today with  plans to return next year and finish the camino to Santiago.

We have been on the camino since september 10th. We have walked 170 miles in the rain, cold, heat and perfect weather. It has been an awesome trip of a lifetime.

We are making plans to go home right now. Sam is an awesome travel agent, as well as navigator, so he is working out the planes, trains and automobiles to get us back to the good old USA. I told Sam he can go on without me but he wants to wait and go together next year. Ahhhhhh.

Hey, since we have had to contact civilization today, we hear for the first time that the national government has shut down services!  Pilgrims don't watch TV so we've  not seen any news. We didn't miss it either.

I will probable post one more blog from the airport before I sign off. Thanks again for all your support and encouragement. Your energy put giddy-up in my gallop.

Jade got a seat on the train back to Madrid.

  2. Oh Mary! You must be so disappointed, so I won't dwell. You have had such a great experience in these past few weeks, I'm sure memories to last a lifetime. The Camino isn't going anywhere so I'm sure your plan to finish it in the future will happen. Love you guys! Safe travels home.

  3. Wish I could send the boot I had to wear this summer for my ankle tendonitis. Either that or the goofy knee walker (like a kid's scooter) that I used. Actually, that would be a blast for you cause you could just coast down the hills but then again going up-hill would really stink!
So sorry for you that your walk has come to an end but am delighted that you already are planning for next year.
Have a safe trip home. Bailey Bo will be happy to see you!

  4. Dear Mary and Sam, We are very proud of what you have both accomplished. You are both forever changed by your experiences thru rain and sunshine, you have had it all! Have enjoyed your commentaries ...love the stories about people you meet! I can picture your conversations in my head :) Safe travels back to the states...don't worry we are still here, despite the government! Ha! At least none of my buildings will be expecting the Feds to come in and inspect their kitchens!

  5. What a bummer Mary! I feel your disappointment but you are right the camino will always be there and you can start where you left off next year. You need to take care of that ankle. You both have accomplished something very few have. You should be very proud. Thank you so much for allowing us to share in your journey. Enjoyed the amazing pictures and your stories. Time to write a book? Have a safe trip home.

  6. Dear Mary, I am so sorry to hear about your injury - please take care of that sprain. Certainly travel home will not be easy on it either, so baby it on the way. I am sure there is a rush of disappointment along with disbelief, but 170 miles, many friends, an experience of a lifetime, and a commitment to make a future trip next year to complete the walk is something truly to celebrate.
Much love to you both & safe travels home.
    Karen

  7. Mary, I'm sorry to hear about your ankle and the change of plans. Continuing the journey next year sounds like a great idea. You two have already accomplished more that most of us would even dare to attempt. It is very inspiring.
This week, on a FOX show called The Mindy Project, the musical group The Nationals, were on. I had never heard of them before you mentioned them on your blog, and now there they were! I saw the guy who resembles Sam. I wonder if he ever gets tired of being stopped and asked if he is related to Sam Bridle.
Have a safe and comfortable trip home. You both are amazing!
    Love,
    Diane
