Day #11 Frat party in Logrono.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but today was disappointing.

We walked 6.2 miles through boring landscape --most along the paved road. We were looking forward to seeing the festival and Spanish culture.   We left in the dark, At 7:00am, and arrived at 10:00am. The hostel opens at 1:00pm so we went and got something to eat and did some banking. All that was ok.  At 11:45 we got into line to get into the hostel because it's the San Mateo Festival.  From the long line, you may have thought we were waiting for the Hyatt to open, but no. All the hotels were full due to the festival so we had to take the deluxe accommodations of 24 people in a room. One word describes the showers..."ick".  Cold showers --Hmmmm, this is hard.

Let me tell you about last night. We had a nice evening talking with our room-mates--7 other young people. I felt like the den mother and actually told one kid to wash his shirt because it stinks. But then "Mr Nobody" owned the shirt. I moved the shirt away from our bunk.

Four of these kids knew each other from college in England and were doing the Camino together for 2 weeks.  They were 23 years old. Happy & chatty kids. Very curious about the USA , asking tons of questions. They all wanted to come to America and stay in hostels while they walked around sightseeing. Ha ha ha---that made us laugh. Imagine 4 Brit kids walking down the highway in California looking for hostels. They had seen hitch hiking in old movies and asked about that mode of transportation. By the end of the night, they decided that they would buy a van and tour the USA that way, so they could sleep in the van. Ahhh, to be young!

Another kid was from Israel.  ( I think it was his shirt).   Two girls were Spaniards & didn't speak English.

San Mateo seems to be the Patron Saint of Drunks. This frat party started at 1:00 with a big Kaboom of fireworks ---let the drinking begin! Every young person, teen, & pre-teen are carrying 2Liter Coke bottles filled with red wine. The 20-30 year olds have wine skins filled with wine. The game is to squirt the wine into your friend's mouths. People were wasted by 4:00pm, sick in the street, throwing empty coke bottles, breaking glass beer bottles in the square, peeing in the street. (I felt bad for the nun walking in front of me).  We are just too old to call this fun. We were disgusted and it was only 5;00 pm.

We found an outside cafe away from Delta Chi-Spain Chapter and had a good dinner. Now we are back in the hostel. The noise from the street festival and sleeping with all these people promises to be a lousy night. Tomorrow should be a better day

Cafe where we ate lunch. We just gnawed on of the hanging pig legs.

  1. As a vegetarian , I have to say the pig legs are disgusting!! The scenery is beautiful and the cathedral from yesterday...so Cool! Cant wait to see more pictures of it...and hear all about your travels. You are both doing awesome! An average of 2 miles an hour, I cant do that on a bike!! Really impressed that you are on the trail by 7 am! Love Leisa and Dan.

  2. Even though I know you are kidding about gnawing on the hanging pigs' legs, I have to say it made me cringe. I'm not sure I could have even stood by them. The picture of the pig's leg/hoof didn't help either. GROSS!
The amount of walking that you guys are doing is incredible, and the scenery is amazing. I'm sure you realize just how few people ever accomplish something like this. Love, Diane

  3. Hey Mary,
Mom use to tell stinky people to wash their shirts when we were in church. Said "soap is cheap". And then our whole family left THAT pew and moved to a different, far away pew- just to make a statement.
So you're just carrying on a family tradition in far away Spain. Keep up the good work.
