Day #14. September 23, 2013. Burgos

13th century cathedral of Santa Maria. It is one of the most beautiful, large Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
Our hotel room looks out upon the cathedral.

This Picture taken from sitting on the bed in our room.  I thought about putting my barefoot in the picture for proof but it took away from the spirituality of the moment.

A policeman prevents people from parking in the square.

I've always wanted a Knight in Shining Armor.  Seriously, I have. I found one in an antique shop in Hull, England in 1993. The cost was 1800£ for the stripped down model with no sword, no shield & no Holy Grail.  Practical Gary would not let me buy it because "it's too big to put on the coffee table" and too much money.  But how cool would it be to have 'Sir Drinkalot' on the deck at the Lakehouse wearing a Hawaiian swimsuit (instead of that frilly, gay red velvet skirt) drinking a beer!  Ha ha. I should have bought it. (Sue Lanphier would have bought it and had me ship it home for her). This picture was taken In our hotel lobby today. I wanted to put on his helmet but the registration lady was watching me.

REST DAY TODAY!
I did not feel well yesterday. I had a low grade fever, chills, fatigue, achy and fell asleep as soon as I laid down to rest.  Maybe I caught a bug from sleeping with a hundred people in the same room.  But because of my need to rest today, we took a bus from Najera to Burgos--60miles. It would have taken us 6 days to walk this route. I felt a tad guilty as our bus passed all the pilgrims walking the Camino on the side of the road. But them I rubbed my skinny aching knees and realized "I'm still on the Camino".

We checked into a very nice 4 star hotel called Mason del Cid in Burgos. (Www.mesondelcid.es).  We are directly in the city center & across the grand cathedral. Super cool.

I'm feeling a lot better today. Resting quite comfortably. We are staying here two nights. There are many sites to see in this medieval town. Plus, It felt great to take a bath!

Another city square in Burgos--walking distance from hotel.

Original painting in St Nicholas Church in Burgos. I wish I could remember more information on symbolism from all those college Humanities classes. This painting looks like a Devils vs. Angels theme. Christ is surrounded by his 12 disciples. The quarterback angel is holding scales and weighing two people with a Devil under the one person that is going to be sacked. Pretty amazing details.

Lunch.

  1. Mary and Sam,

Sorry, I have not kept up with your blog, I promise to be a more dedicated reader. Don't feel guilty about taking a break and taking care of yourself when you don't feel well. The goal is to complete the whole journey, not to fall ill and be unable to finish this great undertaking. You are my hero!

I spoke to Lynn today and she wanted me to tell you that she and Mary R. are reading your blog often but haven't been able to post any messages. They are with you in spirit and send all their love and encouragement. Be safe. Love, Jojy (Lynn & Mary).

  2. I'll bet Gary would have let you buy that knight if he was holding a scale! I don't know if I would have bought it, 1800£ is a lot of money. What is that like a million dollars? We'll have to ask Jenny and Jeff for the conversion. Glad to know you are taking care of yourself, stay well Mary.
